We will explore bugs, flowers and nature around
us. Class will start with making a journal, then
take a walk and move into painting, collage and
drawing both in the studio and outside.  "Art"
making and vocabulary will be an important
aspect of this class. Each child will go home with
an observation written in their journal.
The Hundred Languages of Children
No way.
The hundred is there.
The child is made of one hundred.
The child has a hundred languages
a hundred hands
a hundred thoughts
a hundred ways of thinking
of playing, of speaking.
a hundred, always a hundred
ways of listening
of marveling, of loving
a hundred joys
for singing and understanding
a hundred worlds to discover
a hundred worlds to invent
a hundred worlds to dream.
The child has a hundred languages
(and a hundred hundred hundred more)
but they steal ninety-nine.
The school and the culture
separate the head from the body.
They tell the child to think without
hands
to do without head
to listen and not to speak
to understand without joy
to love and to marvel
only at Easter and Christmas.
They tell the child
to discover the world already there
and of the hundred
they steal ninety-nine.
They tell the child
that work and play
reality and fantasy
science and imagination
sky and earth
reason and dream
are things
that do not belong together.
And thus they tell the child
that the hundred is not there.
The child says
“No way – The hundred is there.”

Thank you Ruth for introducing him to art in such a
exploitative way.  When he got home from preschool that day he
began collecting stuff with his hands.  And first thing this
morning he was making a beautiful self portrait. Its so neat to
watch your child discover all aspects of art that you may not be
able to do as easily at home. We have greatly expanded our art
supplies and I have become much more relaxed about what goes
during his process of making his masterpieces.

This class was wonderful and allowed both Seth and me to
experience paint in many ways. We were given the instructions
to relax, experiment and see what happens. One of my favorite
bits of the class was afterwards when we talked about what we
noticed in our children and ourselves while working. I would
encourage anyone, artist or not to look into this class, you will
have a lot of fun.

We love them!  Ruth is so good with the kids and has wonderful
ideas.  So, come join us!

When you expose children to art your giving
them one of the few if only mediums that
have no rules. This teaches them to think
outside of the box. This is both educational
and releasing for the child as the child is always
being reminded where "the box" is. When the
child grows and applies this thinking to anything she or he may go on to do
then they have something unique to give to their field of interest. Thinking
creatively is a gift that art teaches the child. Especially when the art is material
based and inquiry driven. (not project driven) I see that this is the backbone
to the Reggio Emilia Way of teaching. Italy has a cultural appreciation for art
and a living art history that makes this practice natural for Reggio Emilia
students. How can we apply this to ours ?

Exploring BUGS ! One of the kinds of classes we have.
Before Class
* Look at books with bug pictures
* Ask your children questions, however ask the questions without making them
answer aloud.  The may surprise you and answer a day or two later.

How does a bug walk
What do bugs eat
Where do bugs sleep
Do bugs brush their teeth

* Ask your child if they want to write a bug letter/note Dear Mrs. Bug.........
Please bring
* Jar w/ lid, magnifying glass, tweezers, bug book, snack, good shoes

We will be walking around the property to explore bugs, talk about them, draw
& paint them. On our picnic blanket we will have snack and share our
observations and write an observation card for each child to hang with there
artwork and photographs..
